Everton further strengthened their side today with the signing of Jermaine Beckford from Leeds United. The 26-year old striker was a revelation in League One this season scoring 31 goals, including the two most important of the season, the match-winner against Bristol Rovers to earn promotion to the Championship and the strike that sent Manchester United crashing out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford. Because Beckford was out of contract, Everton did not have to shell out big money for a transfer fee, having only to agree to personal terms. Beckford was widely expected to move in the January transfer window but a free-fall for Leeds and several questions about his attitude kept big money suitors away until now. Clearly he is a fantastic striker at a lower level, though it remains to be seen how effective he can be against Premier League competition on a regular basis. Regardless, the notion that Beckford would chose Everton is a boon to the Toffees chances of signing other players this summer. Combined with young Jack Rodwell’s decision to remain at Goodison Park alongside Tim Cahill, the Toffees are developing a nucleus of strong players that is very attractive to players seeking a summer move.

This is brilliant news! I may become an Everton fan, because I loved watching Becks at Leeds these last two years. Can score on the fly or positioned in the box. I hope his success translates to the Premier League, giving Everton more options to move forward.
It’s absolutely given me more reasons to watch Everton next season. I already enjoyed watching the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill but Beckford should make them even more dynamic. And who knows, they may end up with another Landon Donovan loan, or depending on how the World Cup shakes out, a permanent move.
