Chris Hughton, the manager who brought Newcastle United back to the Premier League, has been sacked by the club today. With nineteen points through sixteen games, Toon are not off to the best possible start, though they are currently in eleventh place and four points clear of the relegation zone. In fact, Newcastle just drew Chelsea and are currently clear of perpetual European qualifiers Liverpool, Aston Villa and Everton. Yet the brass at St. James’ Park were never likely to have Hughton continue on for very long once the return to the Premier League was complete.
In the immediate future, Peter Beardsley will be caretaker manager when Toon travel to Liverpool on the weekend. Beyond that the club has not indicated a preference for replacement though rumors have of course swirled around Alan Shearer as well as Alan Pardew.
