Everton were defeated on penalties by Brentford at Griffin Park in the third round of the Carling Cup. Gary Alexander scored for the Bees on 41 minutes, equalizing Seamus Coleman’s very early goal for the visitors. There the score held through extra-time and into penalties. The League One side then converted four of its penalties while Everton’s Jermaine Beckford and Phil Jagielka missed for the Toffees, sending the Premier League side crashing out of the League Cup competition and adding to the early woes on the blue side of Liverpool this season.
