30-year old defender Sébastien Squillaci has joined Arsenal on a £5m move from Spanish side Sevilla. The central defender refused to play in Sevilla’s Champions League qualifier against Braga last week to ensure that he would not be cup-tied and therefore prohibited from playing for Arsenal in the Champions League later this season. The French international has previously played at Monaco and OL in Ligue 1 and can now claim to have played at the highest level in France, Spain and England. Clearly Arsène Wenger’s status in France was enough to attract Squillaci, not to mention the promise of a partnership with Thomas Vermaelen in central defense.
