Manchester City beat down Liverpool for most of their game at Eastlands, controlling possession and recording a clean sheet, 3-0. Gareth Barry opened the scoring, assisted by debutant James Milner, and Carlos Tévez scored the next two, the second of which came from the spot after Adam Johnson was hauled down in the box. Johnson was easily the top player for City, though Yaya Touré played an important role in developing the City attack. The Reds were not sharp for most of the game with Fernando Torres starting and moving much too slowly for such an able opponent. Substitute Ryan Babel did send one off the post in the second half but mostly Joe Hart was untroubled in goal for the Citizens.
