BSC Young Boys took it to Tottenham Hotspur in the first half, pouring in three goals in the first half-hour, before holding on for a 3-2 victory at the Stade de Suisse in Berne. Senad Lulić, Henri Bienvenu and Xavier Hochstrasser (pictured) scored the goals that gave the home side a stunning 3-0 lead after just 28 minutes. But Sébastien Bassong’s header just before half-time brought Spurs back into the game. The second half saw both sides take and just miss wonderful opportunities before Roman Pavlyuchenko blasted in a fantastic, near-post goal on 83 minutes. The second away goal means Spurs can win the second leg at White Hart Lane 1-0 and advance on the away goals rule. Still, Young Boys are very much alive, provided they score even a single goal in London next week.

Four other ties featured their first legs today:

Zenit 1 – Auxerre 0
Dynamo Kyiv 1 – Ajax 1
Rosenborg 2 – København 1
Sparta Praha 0 – Žilina 2
