The annual Community Shield match at Wembley saw 2009/10 Premier League runners-up Manchester United take down double holders Chelsea, 3-1. Both sides played well, though it took quite some time for the Blues to work into the match. United scored from Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernández and Dimitar Berbatov (pictured) while Salomon Kalou scored the lone goal for Chelsea. Valencia’s opener was the only goal for the first 75 minutes, before three more poured in over the final quarter-hour. Edwin van der Sar saved several late shots that would have drawn Chelsea even. Obviously the Community Shield is nothing more than a friendly, but it does mark the true beginning of the 2010/11 season. League play begins next weekend and the line-ups trotted out by both sides are likely to be similar to the starting XI on opening day.
