Óscar Cardozo (pictured) scored the fifth and final penalty for Paraguay to send the South American side to their first ever World Cup quarterfinals. The 5-3 victory on penalties came after 120 minutes of scoreless football against Japan at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. Yuichi Komano’s penalty off the crossbar was the only difference between the two teams over all that time as Paraguay smartly finished each one of their penalty shots. So the Paraguayans make it four South American sides in the quarterfinals, fully half of the field. Japan’s loss ends the Asian contingent, though the Blue Samurai certainly played well enough to earn a spot in the final eight.
