Arjen Robben (pictured) scored the opener on his return from injury and Wesley Sneijder the second as Holland did just enough to outlast Slovakia and reach the quarterfinals, 2-1 at Durban Stadium. Robben’s goal was the only score of the first half and provided the Dutch with the cushion necessary to ease back and play overwhelmingly patient football. Sneijder doubled the advantage after Dirk Kuyt’s little header beat Slovak keeper Ján Mucha, leaving the goal wide open. That second goal was vital as Róbert Vittek scored a penalty in the dying moments of extra-time to pull back a consolation goal for the exiting Slovaks. Now the Netherlands are on to the round of eight where they will face the winner of today’s Brazil-Chile match.
