Yaya Touré (pictured), Romaric and Salomon Kalou all scored goals for Côte d’Ivoire but even a 3-0 win against North Korea at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit was not nearly enough to send the Ivorians on to the knockout rounds. With Portugal’s far superior goal differential, Côte d’Ivoire would have needed a 10-0 win and a Portugal loss just to finish second place in Group G. Neither happened and the Ivorians, many pundits’ favorite African side before the tournament, go out. North Korea were already eliminated before today’s game and could do little to slow Côte d’Ivoire. In fact they were lucky it was only a 3-0 defeat. North Korea did not score in this World Cup, but they did turn heads in their opening match against Brazil. Unfortunately that form did not hold.
