A brace from Diego Forlán (pictured) included a late penalty and Uruguay blasted South Africa 3-0 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. After Forlán’s opener before half-time, the game was stuck at 1-0 until a straight red card for South African keeper Itumeleng Khune gave the Uruguayan star a penalty and put the game away. Down to ten men in the final minutes, the hosts could not keep Álvaro Pereira from adding a third. The three points put Uruguay in a very favorable position in Group A as they now top the table on four points. France and Mexico will play their second game tomorrow, which will help determine exactly how well off Uruguay are and how much work South Africa will have to do to keep from being the first host nation to ever fail to reach the knock out rounds.
