Bobby Zamora (pictured) and Damien Duff led Fulham to yet another European victory at Craven Cottage, 2-1 over Wolfsburg. But it was the 89th minute away goal by Alexander Madlung that gives the German champions hope for their return leg next week. Obviously Fulham needed to win at home to have any shot at reaching the Europa League semi-finals. Doing so is very helpful but they might rue that last minute away goal. Of course scoring an away goal of their own next week puts them that much closer to the next round.

In Lisbon, Óscar Cardozo scored twice from the spot to lead Benfica back past Liverpool, 2-1. The Reds went down to ten-men in the first half when Ryan Babel was sent off for putting his hands to the face of Luisão after a particularly hard tackle. Having scored first on Daniel Agger’s wonderful back-heel, Liverpool just did not have enough to hold on away from home. But the away goal will be useful in the return leg back at Anfield Road next week. The Reds will be without Babel or Emiliano Insúa due to card accumulations.

The other two games finished like this:

Hamburg 2 – Standard 1
Valencia 2 – Atlético Madrid 2
