Lionel Messi (pictured) scored twice with Bojan and Pedro also tallying goals to easily send Barcelona through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League 4-0 over Stuttgart and 5-1 on aggregate. After a tense 1-1 draw at the Mercedes-Benz Arena just a fortnight ago the holders responded resoundingly by dominating their German opponents at the Camp Nou. Barça’s victory provides at least a small degree of pride for Spain after both Real Madrid and Sevilla were eliminated.

In France the outcome was much more in doubt but Les Girondins de Bordeaux survived a determined Olympiakos side 2-1 and 3-1 on aggregate at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh scored for Bordeaux, the second coming in the 88th minute to seal advancement for Les Girondins. Both clubs had a man sent off so the climactic points for each side came with at least one man off. Bordeaux become the second French club, alongside Olympique Lyonnais, to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

  1. It really was amazing. Not as good as Nasri’s goal for Arsenal last weekend, but pretty damn good. And totally classic Messi too. Lehmann had no chance.
