It may not always be pretty, but Liverpool keep winning and putting the pressure on that coveted fourth place. Today’s victory came via Steven Gerrard (pictured) and Fernando Torres, a formula missing for quite some time on Merseyside, to hold off Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield Road. The exciting first half saw Liverpool go up on Gerrard’s 20th, only to be equalized from Keith Andrews’ 40th minute penalty. Torres scored what wound up being the winner on 44 minutes for the Reds. The three points do not change their position but it does keep Liverpool in the immediate sights of both Tottenham and Manchester City ahead. As for Rovers, their loss stunts them in twelfth place, missing out on an opportunity to go to eleventh with even a single point.
And the weekend wrapped up in style with Sunderland and Fulham playing to a nil-nil draw at the Stadium of Light. The point for the Cottagers does send them up to ninth place, forcing Everton to tenth. The Black Cats remain in trouble in fourteenth place, now just three points clear of the drop zone.
