Holders Manchester United and Aston Villa will meet at Wembley on Sunday to decided the League Cup final. Both sides are playing very well domestically and both won convincingly in their most recent games. Villa are five time champions of the League Cup with the last two coming in 1994 and 1996. United have won the League Cup three times including in 2006 and 2009. While the Carling Cup is certainly the least important of the three major trophies in England each season (the League and the FA Cup being of higher priority), this match is of great importance to these two clubs in particular. Villa have not won a trophy of any kind since their 1996 League Cup victory over Leeds United. Winning any silverware would be a huge boost to the club and to manager Martin O’Neill. United are already out of the FA Cup and continue to run second behind Chelsea in the Premier League. It’s very possible that a loss in the League Cup final could prevent United from winning any trophies for the first time since 2005.
