Bobby Zamora scored a second half goal to send Fulham to a big win in Europe, 2-1 over holder Shakhtar Donetsk at Craven Cottage. Luiz Adriano equalized for the visitors after Zoltán Gera’s (pictured) third minute opener. But it was Zamora’s winner that gives the Cottagers the advantage heading back to Ukraine for next week’s second leg. Shakhtar’s away goal will be helpful though.

Liverpool eked out a 1-0 win over Unirea Urziceni when David N’Gog headed in on 81 minutes. The Reds were up against it with the Romanian side but ultimately won the day in an important first leg at Anfield Road. The clean sheet means Liverpool have the advantage in Unirea next week, but only a one-goal advantage will make for a tough re-match.

The rest of the first leg scores:

Rubin Kazan 3 – Hapoel 0
Ajaz 1 – Juventus 2
Club Brugge 1 – Valencia 0
Villarreal 2 – Wolfsburg 2
Standard Liège 3 – Red Bull Salzburg 2
Twente 1 – Werder Bremen 0
Lille 2 – Fenerbahçe 1
Hertha 1 – Benfica 1
Atlético Madrid 1 – Galatasaray 1
København 1 – Olympique de Marseille 3
Panathinaikos 3 – Roma 2
Hamburg 1 – PSV 0
