Two glaring errors by Łukasz Fabiański put two goals in for homestanding Porto and provided a 2-1 victory for the Portuguese side against Arsenal. Silvestre Varela and Falcão capitalized for Porto in scoring after disastrous mistakes from the Gunners’ keeper. Sol Campbell, of all people, scored for the Gunners, his first goal since the Champions League final against Barcelona four years ago. But the triple header that resulted in Campbell’s goal was not enough to win the first leg between the two sides. It did however give Arsenal hope going back to London in that it provided the Gunners with an away goal. The game was very exciting with end-to-end football playing out for nearly the entire match.
And in Germany, Miroslav Klose scored an 89th minute goal to lift Bayern Munich to a 2-1 win over Fiorentina at the Allianz Arena. Arjen Robben’s penalty just before half-time was the first goal but Per Krøldrup leveled terms just five minutes into the second half. It fell to Klose to lift the home side to victory in the first leg, though the Italians did earn a valuable away goal with a trip to Florence ahead.
